It’s very interesting to meet different business people and see different approaches to business and taking action. One thing I have learnt is that action is the key to a successful business.
When I meet people often share what they want from their business and what their goals are and it’s disheartening when three to six months later, nothing really seems to have happened for them, despite the best laid plans. So here are my three top tips for taking action:
1) Be honest with yourself: Are you being absolutely honest with yourself that you are doing everything you believe you should or are you talking about “having that meeting” with someone who could help you get on in business.
2) Use your business plan as a working document: Refer to it monthly, or even weekly to be sure that you are still going in the right direction. Have you done the market research? Are you meeting the people you need to and bringing in the sales? If your marketing isn’t working, does it need changing? Do you need to adjust your business plan with new products, services or strategies?
3) Listen to feedback: Listen to your customers and act upon feedback. I don’t necessarily mean that every complaint should be the start of a restructure but take on board key lessons which come up again and again. Do what is necessary to evolve your business. Businesses cannot afford to stand still or rest on their laurels. It’s a competitive market and successful companies are always one step ahead. Remember you don’t have to do this alone, there are professionals in finance, marketing and accountancy who can support you and act as advisors and sounding boards to help.
If you take no action, you will struggle to grow. If you feel that you aren’t growing as you had planned but are taking lots of actions, then maybe something needs to change?
